Secrets of the Dark Forest
by Robert Griffing

As a Boy Scout in my early teens, our troop hiked and camped in southern Indiana's Hoosier National Forest. I vividly recall the remarkable darkness at mid-day beneath the canopy of Oak, Hickory, and Sycamore trees. Those memories are captured by the painting, Secrets of the Dark Forest, by Robert Griffing. It depicts two Mohawk Native Americans finding their way through such a forest. To me it is symbolic of my faith experience through my personal Dark Night of the Soul. The original painting hangs in the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. It is one of the finest museums of the American West and Native American art in the United States.
